The wrong side of the fabric is usually cotton based so when sewing the right sides together there is no need to make any adjustments when sewing. Top stitching can sometimes prove tricky, so here are some different tools that can be used to make things a bit easier!
1. Stitch and tear
2. Tissue paper
3. Washi tape
4. Walking foot
We find stitch and tear the best technique to use (all kits will include a piece) to give the best finish when stitching on the right side of the fabric.
1. Stitch and tear
The stitch and tear works as a barrier between your sewing foot and the fabric, so it should glide over the fabric more easily. To start simply rest the stitch and tear on top of the seam you'd like to top stitch (shown in the first picture below) Make sure the stitch and tear is right to the edge of your seam. Also, ensure your stitch length has been increased to at least 4 - 4.5. A zipper foot allows you to get close to the edge, and also helps to see where you are going. When you have finished stitching, pull the stitch and tear away from the edge of your seam. The holes from the stitches act as a perforated edge so should come away easily. You can always us scissors to trim the stitch and tear on one side if you find it is pulling your stitches, this should help when taking the stitch and tear away.

2. Tissue paper
Tissue paper works in the same way, it is slightly easier to pull away after sewing but can be a bit more slippery when sewing onto it as it is more lightweight than stitch and tear.

3. Washi tape
The washi tape or masking tape can be stuck to the bottom of your sewing foot. This helps the foot to move over the fabric without getting stuck. Make a little snip in the middle of the tape to allow the needle to work its way through the foot. If your machine allows it, you can always try adjusting the foot pressure with this technique too.

4. Walking foot
If you have a walking foot for your sewing machine it can be used for sewing over 'sticky' fabrics such as  oil cloth and faux leather. The grooves on the bottom of the foot make it easier to walk over the fabric. Make sure the needle is to the middle position so it doesn't hit the foot. Sew slowly with this foot on to ensure a straight line of stitching!

Another tip is try not to use too many pins when sewing with faux leather as it can leave little holes in the fabric. Wonder-clips are handy when using this fabric or simply pin in the seam allowance of your project so no holes will be seen!
Hopefully with these tips and tricks you will find sewing with faux leather a breeze!
